Leyland Simmons

Leyland Simmons, native of Anchorage, Alaska, began his dance training with Barbara Devereaux and Michelangelo Canale before studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Miami City Ballet, The School of American Ballet, and The Ailey School. He graduated from the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City and has been a member of Ailey II and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Leyland has also performed with New York City Ballet, Peridance Ensemble, Forces of Nature Dance Company, Nathan Trice’s/Rituals, George Faison, and Ballet X.


Leyland has performed at Jacob’s Pillow, and international ballet festivals in Cincinnati, Moscow, and Miami. He is a sought-after teacher, having taught at institutions including the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Steps on Broadway, NYU, and The Ailey School. His film, television, and print credits include the History Channel’s "Honor Deferred," The Conan O’Brien Show, and YRB magazine.


Leyland holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s in Dance Education from NYU. He is also a certified teacher in the American Ballet Theater Pre-Primary to Level Three Curriculum. His choreography has been presented at the Apollo Theater, Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and Harlem Stage Gatehouse. Leyland became the resident choreographer of the Harlem School of the Arts in 2016 and the director of Leyland Simmons and Company in 2017. He is also the Co-Founder and Co-Director of Moving Education Institute Inc.
